Intermission History

Intermission Is Reborn

                        This entertainment newspaper has had various managements through the years and recently was re-formed as a not-for-profit organization. It’s being published again, under the aegis of Michael O’Brien, dedicated and hard-working. His newspaper covers lots of theater of all types, college, amateur, semi-professional and professional, at venues throughout the area. And the publication also deals with music, art, literary events and the like, in an ambitious attempt to cover the area as completely as possible.

            The major problem is that the writers are obviously amateurs, and any editing is strictly hit-or-miss. I don’t like poor spelling, but I can survive it – what makes me cringe is the abysmal spelling of the names of the performers. This is insulting to the performer, a human being deserving of courtesy no matter how awful his or her performance, and it shows major ignorance on the part of a reviewer so careless as to not check such simple things like spelling.

            For just a few errors, we can begin with the Flying Karamazov Brothers, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Annie Sprinkle, and Jesse Helms.

            O’Brien is young, eager and apparently hard-working. He wants listings from theaters throughout the area and, he says: “We pledge to uphold the theater community and to support its growth while covering the arts with a fervor which will grow this organization and provide opportunities for artists in all media. Most of all, we wish to be of and for the community as a whole.”

            As far as readers are concerned, well, O’Brien says, “I want to be there for you. I am a public servant and I humble myself to the Intermission statement that I serve.”

            Almost Pulitzerian in its understated tastefulness.
